Old Maggoty is the oldest of the Firstborn Trolls on Abode.
Biography[]
Old Maggoty is a very old troll, who remembers a time when the first Wolfriders first came to the Holt. Maggoty claims to have once been a paramour of King Guttlekraw and later King Greymung after he usurped the former. She was caught by Bearclaw one night stealing dreamberries from the bushes near the Father Tree Holt. She and Bearclaw then became liaisons for their respective peoples in trading matters.
When King Guttlekraw and his trolls invaded King Greymung's kingdom, she, Oddbit and Picknose were the only ones that managed to escape. The trio went to live on the surface where they came across Skywise and Cutter. The elves were captured thanks to Maggoty's potions and were brought to the trolls' dwelling where they intended to keep them as their servants. Unfortunately the elves escaped thanks, outwitting the trolls. Old Maggoty was later captured by Guttlekraw's forces when Picknose led the trio to the Frozen Mountains for Two-Edge's legendary treasure. She and her grandson-in-law slaved in the mines, until they were freed by the Wolfriders and the Go-Backs.
Old Maggoty, along with Picknose accompanied the Wolfriders and Go-Backs to the Palace of the High Ones there they met Timmain, the last of the High Ones. Upon seeing the ancient elf, Old Maggoty cowered in fear as Timmain questioned them if they were the ones who stranded the Palace on the World of Two Moons. After Timmain awakened the Scroll of Color, she and the elves and trolls learned the truth of their ancestors.
After the Wolfriders left Frozen Mountains, Old Maggoty bore witness to Oddbit accepting Picknose hand in marriage now that he was a king. However some years later, Picknose's reign as king came to an end when he lost the throne at a game of toss-stones. Without a throne and followers, Picknose and his family were driven to hide in the treasury from a mob of angry trolls. Old Maggoty complained at the turn of event, blaming her grandson-in-law's stupidity for their predicament. Ekuar who had been kidnapped by the trolls, aided the troll family, by using his powers to create a hole to the surface, where they were retrieved by Rayek and taken to the Palace of the High Ones.
After the Firstcomer Troll was found by the Wolfriders, she was tasked to nurturing him to adequate health before the elves could use their healing magic to restore his form.
She along with many other trolls chose return to the Home Star. Timmain welcomed the trolls that had come, causing the old crone to tear as a High One had personally acknowledge her and the Firstcomer.
Before she departed Abode, she left behind her recipe of dreamberry wine for future generations to concoct. On the StarHome, Maggoty helped to establish a new troll kingdom alongside the Firstcomer Troll. While the younger generations focused on discovering new gems and metals, the old troll turned to cultivating the alien fauna to her potions and remedies.
Whilst preparing a brew, she was frighten by Jink with her father Skywise who was searching for her missing Star Pod, and was angrily chased out of her den.
Later a returned Skywise from his long sojourn in the stars, greeted Old Maggoty, to her disconcertion, and wildly told her tales of her star-flung cousins, the Sculpers.
Personality[]
Old Maggoty comes off as a rude and cantankerous troll, who spend most of her time complaining. However beneath visage of a wrinkled old crone, Old Maggoty is wise and practical troll due to her long years on Abode. Her knowledge on herbal lore and healing is unrivaled among her own kind. While she is not a soft-hearted healer and takes some pleasure in the pain she inflicts to heal her patients, Old Maggoty is not as greedy as the rest of her kind as she can see the bigger picture and prioritize survival over wealth. The troll has not tolerance for or foolishness, and is unafraid to speak her mind pointing out these flaws in others. While these jabs at others can be seen as insulting, her words mostly serve to deflate egos. Old Maggoty while never liking elves, nonetheless recognizes their sense of family and their loyalty to each other, but that is not to say she won't take advantage of these traits for her or her kind's benefit.
Relationships[]
Bearclaw[]
Bearclaw was the elf who caught Old Maggoty stealing the dream berries of the Wolfriders. Her being apprehended by the future Wolfrider chief would leave to the formal trade relations between the Wolfriders and the Forest Trolls beneath the Holt. Of all the elves, Bearclaw was perhaps one of the only elves she came to like and shared her brews of dream berry wine when he served as an intermediary between their two races.
Picknose[]
Old Maggoty never has thought much of Picknose, figuring he'd never amount to much, even though his heart seemed to be in the right place. However, Oddbit has remained, in her own insouciant way, faithful to him, despite Old Maggoty's disapproval.
Oddbit[]
Oddbit is Old Maggoty's granddaughter and while she had high expectations of the younger female troll, Old Maggoty is disappointed at times to Oddbit's vanity and fickleness. Regardless the crone still cares for Oddbit as she helps negotiate on her granddaughter's behalf for a magical facelift from Mender.
Abilities[]
Old Maggoty is a master of herb lore, and is renowned for her secret recipe for brewing the juice of dreamberries into dreamberry wine, a potent lavender distillation that can set even the strongest-stomached elf on his pointed ear.
