Greymung the Shiftless, was the king of the Forest Trolls. His kingdom lay beneath Goodtree's Rest, the Wolfrider Holt at the beginning of the Elfquest series.
History[]
According to Old Maggoty Greymung was a troll child who she nursed in the Frozen Mountains. When he grew and became a mump, the ice wall of the north were dangerously threatening to collapse on top of the Greymung was the troll who suggested to King Guttlekraw that the trolls tunnel to the warmer southern lands using the captive elven rock shapers.
After the underground kingdom was established underneath the Holt, and the trolls settled in, Greymung learned that Guttlekraw wanted to return to the Frozen Mountain, as the ice wall was reported to have melted. Greymung knowing that Guttlekraw only wished to return to the old homeland in order to e close to the Palace of the High Ones, disagreed in this plan. The young troll having his own ambitions and not wishing to follow Guttlekraw any longer then plotted a coup against the king. His plans were overheard by Ekuar and Osek, but the two were then caught by Greymung and his followers who decided to physically maim them to keep them quiet.
Thus the Forest Troll kingdom was created when Greymung led a rebellion against Guttlekraw and his Northern Trolls. Greymung drove Guttlekraw back through the tunnels connecting the Holt to the Frozen Mountains, sealing it off.
Sometime after solidifying his rule, King Greymung knowing that one of the elven rock shapers had escaped during his coup, sent Smelt to seek another rock-shaper.
During Mantricker's reign, he forged a trade agreement with the Woldriders. The trolls would provide the elves with metal weapons, whilst the latter would provide the trolls various game and foodstuffs.
In the reign of Bearclaw, Greymung won a gold ring owned by the Wolfrider chieftain's mate, Joyleaf, and gave it to his paramour Oddbit. Young Cutter seeking to prove himself before his parents, went with Skywise to the lair of the trolls to win it back. King Greymung learning that the boy was Bearclaw's cub, decided to entertain himself and allowed the Wolfrider a chance to win his mother's ring in a game of toss-stone. However the troll king won and Cutter became a slave to the trolls. Cutter was held for ransom for many moons, forcing the Wolfriders to pay a never-ending ransom to ensure Cutter's return. Later Picknose learned that the king had cheated in the, which disgusted the young troll as it tarnished troll honor. The troll going against his king, then met with Skywise to help free his friend.
When the savage humans tribes burned Holt to the ground, the Wolfriders sought shelter in Greymung's domain. When Skywise dared to touch his scared footstool, Greymung struck which caused Cutter to retaliate and threaten the troll king with his dagger, taking a piece of stone as compensation.
To aveneg himself, Greymung later ordered the elves stranded in the desert, hoping to cause their deaths. Some time after his trickery against the Wolfriders, Greymung's domain was intruded by a self-exiled Rayek who barged into the troll tunnel, stealing food and supplies. Due to the elf was a magic user who could more rock, Greymung ordered tRayek be captured, but the forest trolls proved no match for the elusive member of the Sun Folk who later helped free Ekuar.
Greymung was later killed and eaten by the Frozen Mountain Trolls, when they invaded his kingdom, his surviving people later enslaved by King Guttlekraw and taken to the north.
Personality[]
Greymung's relationship with the elves was better characterized as maliciously passive aggressive as opposed to the outright aggression displayed by Guttlekraw and the Northern Trolls. While Guttlekraw attacked the elves directly. he preferred others to do his dirty work. In his youth he was known to be overly ambitious and was capable of cruelty, though his punishments were swift and quick rather than slow and agonizing compared to Guttlekraw.
